Stephen Babcock Biography
Stephen Babcock is a native of Ruston, Louisiana. He earned a B.S. from Louisiana Tech University and subsequently received a J.D. from the LSU Paul M. Herbert Law Center. Martindale-Hubbell, the authoritative resource for information on attorneys worldwide, has rated Mr. Babcock “BV,” an indication of High to Very High legal ability, an exemplary reputation and a well-established practice, a designation only 20% of attorneys in the country attain. Additionally, Mr. Babcock’s firm is one of only 130 in Louisiana who has met A.M. Best’s stringent standards for admission in the 2008 Edition of Best's Directory of Attorneys. Mr. Babcock’s practice is entirely comprised of litigation and appeals of business and insurance matters. Mr. Babcock also serves as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Louisiana in select litigation involving the State of Louisiana. Mr. Babcock was a 2006 Baton Rouge Business Report Top Forty Under 40 recipient and a 2007 Baton Rouge People On the Move honoree. In June of 2002 he was awarded the Louisiana State Bar Association's Stephen T. Victory Award for his article, "Experts at Summary Judgment: Examining the Effect of Independent Fire Insurance Co. v. Sunbeam Corp." in the Louisiana Bar Journal. He published “Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Law in Louisiana: Defending the UM / Bad Faith Claim.” National Business Institute, October, 2001. He was the Louisiana Author of the 2008 Defense Research Institute (DRI) State by State Compendium on Non-Competition Agreements.
Court Admissions:
Mr. Babcock is admitted to practice law in the state of Louisiana, all federal district courts in Louisiana, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Membership and Associations:
Some of Mr. Babcock's memberships and associations include the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, Associated Builders and Contractors, Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association, Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, Baton Rouge Claims Association, Federal Bar Association (Litigation and Appellate Sections), Bar Association of the Fifth Federal Circuit, and the Defense Research Institute (Litigation and e-discovery committees). Lastly, he is a Louisiana Bar Foundation Fellow. He is the immediate past president of the LSU ΣAE housing corporation.
Community Involvement:
Highly involved in community activities, Mr. Babcock was selected as one of the “Fifty for the Future” for the Capital Area United Way where he was awarded for being the top participant (2008). Mr. Babcock served as the Governmental Division Chairperson on the Cabinet for the Capital Area United Way (2008). Mr. Babcock served on the Executive Board of Directors for the Istrouma Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America (2007). Mr. Babcock served as the chairperson of the Friends of Scouting Campaign – in which he was the most successful fundraising chairperson in the history of the organization, raising over $600,000 and starting a new annual luncheon for the organization (2007). Mr. Babcock served on the Board of Directors of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber (2004-2008). Mr. Babcock served on the board of directors of the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge (2005-2007). Mr. Babcock served as the Vice-chairperson of the Government Affairs Committee of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber (2004). Mr. Babcock served as the Vice-president of Corporate Membership for Forum 35 (2004). Mr. Babcock served as the Chairperson of the Baton Rouge Classic Golf Tournament (2004). Mr. Babcock served as the Vice-president of Development for Forum 35 – in which he was the most successful fundraising chairperson in the history of the organization (2003). Mr. Babcock served on the Forum 35 Board of Directors (2002-2005). Mr. Babcock served on the Executive Committee for Forum 35 (2003-2005). Mr. Babcock served as the chairperson of the Viva il Vino! Wine Gala (2002). Mr. Babcock served as the chairperson of the Baton Rouge Ducks Unlimited Sponsors’ Banquet (2003-2008). Mr. Babcock served as the chairperson of the Louisiana Peach Festival Parade in Ruston, LA (1993).
