SoGo sued for eviction, files response

Baton Rouge Business Report

June 9, 2006

A lawsuit has been filed against SoGo Live, ordering the downtown club to leave its spot in the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino Atrium. According to the suit, the casino ordered the club to close by May 31, in accordance with its lease agreement. The suit also contends that SoGo was late in renewing its lease and failed to pay rent in April and May, so the lease was cancelled.

Stephen Babcock, SoGo's attorney, says the club is willing to leave its space in the Belle atrium, if the casino would comply with the buyout clause. SoGo officials say the casino owes them $336,492 for terminating the lease, the casino estimates the amount at $105,019. SoGo officials also say they have paid their rent. In a statement, SoGo owners say they hope the suit resolves the current limbo the club is in and allows them to look for new locations. A hearing on the suit is set for June 16.
